Based loosely on Dostoevsky's novel The Gambler.
Jim Bennett is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank, a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett's future. As his relationship with a student deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance.
After Rupert Wyatt's cult success with ‘The Escapist’ (2008) where Atomic Arts completed all the visual effects for the feature film, Rupert next went on to direct 20th Century Fox's blockbuster ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, on which Atomic did some monkey magic. In 2014 Rupert directed ‘The Gambler’ starring Mark Wahlberg and John Goodman. Atomic were awarded all of the visual effects for the film. We have also just completed over 200 shots on Ruperts latest film - Captive State which releases early 2019.
Atomic totalled over 180 shots and included multiple 3d crowd extension sequences and a 30 second full 3D environment and water simulation, running straight into camera, of a photoreal waterfall - used to illustrate the gamblers deteriorating stream of consciousness.
Atomic completed multiple 3d crowd extension shots for the basketball sequence.
